150 days with Gridvirt.com

My 150 day review of GridVirt.com

I signup at GridVirt.com because I had heard about their insane I/O speeds. So of course I had to test this out. And everything I had heard was true, they have the best I/O speed of them all.

Product/hardware/price

GirdVirt.com uses hardware virtualized KVM Virtual Private Servers with a SSD RAID setup and multiple 10GBit network backbone. And it’s not hard to see that they uses good hardware. The server is very fast, their network is very good, and all tops of with the insane disk speed from their SSD RAID.

Their VPS plans start with 1 Node plan, and it’s the plan I’m using. This plan offer 4 CPU cores, 1.5 GB of RAM, 20 GB SSD disk, 25 GB NAS, 1 TB BW and a 200mbit port. The price is $25/mo without any promo codes.

When you setup your VPS plan you get the choices of:

  • SSD Configuration: 60,000 4kb Random R/W IOPS, 400-500MB/s Sequential or
  • SSD Configuration: 100,000 4kb Random R/W IOPS, 600-900MB/s Sequential

So you can get the extra disk speed if your site needs it. They take $5/mo more for the best speed.

On their pages they say that they will never put more then 10 users on 1 node, so you will never share the server with more then 9 others. This can be one of the reason why there servers is so fast.

Service/Support

Since my 30 day review I have not had any support tickets. We had contact when they moved me from one DC to the new DC, and the migration was a dream. No issues at all.

The quality of the reply has also been good on their communications.

Network/uptime

I have a 99.977% uptime since I was moved to a new DC, so I will say that the network and uptime is great. And their network speeds is also great, always getting my port speed.

Conclusion

GridVirt delivers what they promise, incredible fast VPS plans with really high disk performance. And all this for $25/mo. I glad I’m a customer and will stay for a long time. The only drawback for me, is that they only offers servers in USA.

Edit 2014:

I have reduced the number of points because the do not sell service anymore.

Service/Support

I have had two support tickets in this period. The first one was about my port speed being lower then 200mbit, and the second one was about downtime on my VPS.

They replied back within 14 minutes of my first ticket, and only used 3 minutes before they replied back on my second ticket. So to be an unmanaged host, they do reply fast on tickets.

The quality of the reply has also been good. The port speed issue was past on to their DC, that fixed it pretty fast. The downtime was also a DC issue.

Network/uptime

I have only had one outage my first 30 days, but it was a “huge” one, over 40 minutes of downtime. And when my VPS did go down, GridVirt.com pages, including support page also did go down. So there was no way to create any support ticket. The outage was caused by a power distribution unit, and after 40 minutes GridVirt was placed on a backup power distribution unit, and their sites and my server was up again.

More info about the Coloinseattle Tukwila Datacenter power outage can be found here…

Beside this my network is working very good, and i get my 200mbit port speed.

30 day review – GetKVM.com

My first 30 days with GetKVM has gone without any issues, and I do not have much to write. They do deliver their product, and you get great value for your money.

Product/hardware/price

GetKVM.com special in KVM servers. They are a UK based company with servers in Germany. They offer four VPS plan from 256 MB RAM to 2 GB RAM. I use a 512 MB plan called Medium and it comes with 20 GB RAID10 HDD, 750 GB BW and 2 x Intel 3.3 GHz CPU Core(s). My server is pretty fast, with a UnixBench score of 2291. They held the first place for some time on my Top 20 list.

Service/Support

GetKVM offers KVM servers and i think they have a good service. Most of my communication has been at webhostingtalk.com, so really don’t know how fast they reply on sales etc. When I did my benchmark of them, we discovered an issue with one of their nodes. GetKVM got the issue fixed within short time, so they took the problem serious.

What can I say, I ordered, I got my VPS, it was online, and it have not been any issues after that. I have had no reason to rise any support tickets before today. Tried to access my SolusVM control panel, but the server hosting SolusVM was not online, or I could not connect to it. But GetKVM has sent out info that they will have vacation from 07.08 – 21.08, so support ticket can take some time. Still, it’s not a big problem, and I’m sure it will be fixed.

Network/uptime

My server has had 100% uptime my first 30 days. The network seems good.

Conclusion

GetKVM is a new company, started this year, but the owner Ashley Hawkridge has owned other brands, like VMPort.com, so he is not new to this game. Their servers is solid with a good network. Their price is good for what you get. I have no problems recommending their service.

My first impression review of Urpad.net

The last months I have tested out OpenVZ hosting (using Virtualmin/Webmin), and I have used a host called VMPort. They were sold to a company called FTNHosting. After they were sold it got the impression that VMPort was not the brand they used any time/resources on.

So I ordered VPS plans at Urpad.net, don’t knowing that they had the same owner as VMPort. Still, Urpad.net has several active people here at WHT, and their sales staff replied fast, so I got a good impression of Urpad.net.

They only offer OpenVZ plans, so I ordered one in Iceland, their new location and one in Maidenhead, UK.
I had strange issue when I first ordered. My first VPS did not get active, but my second VPS got active straight away. But after some time I did realize that I had not pressed the Finalize order button.

Urpad.net is also very active here at WHT and after a PM my first VPS was online.

Their hardware seems very good and their network also. They have good prices that got even better with their new WHT offer. $5.99/mo for a 1 GB, 40 GB, 500 GB BW plan. I did replace my first two VPS with their new offer, and they were very helpful getting me an open spot on their UK node. It was in fact full, and was not a choice on their order page when I ordered, but they still fixed a place there.

Urpad has also had the fastest reply on a support ticket, only two minutes. Very good time since they are unmanaged.
I have two VPS plans with Urpad.net, one paid month by month and one prepaid for 6 months.

My first impression of Urpad is very good, also after I found out that they have the same owner as VMPort. Very good hardware, good network and very fast support.

Edit 2014:

Have reduced the number of points since they are NOT the same company anymore.
